Enter a start time and an end time, and the minutes of break if there was one. Add more rows to total several stretches or several days.
How do I calculate the hours between two times?
Subtract the start time from the end time, counting hours and minutes separately, then take off any break. From 9:00 am to 5:30 pm is 8 hours 30 minutes; less a 30 minute break it is 8 hours.
To write minutes as a decimal, divide them by 60: 15 minutes is 0.25 of an hour, 30 minutes is 0.50 and 45 minutes is 0.75. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the stretch ran past midnight, so add 24 hours before subtracting.
Minutes as a decimal
Many payrolls write hours as a decimal: 7.50 hours, not 7:30. To turn minutes into a decimal, divide them by 60.
| Minutes | As a decimal |
|---|---|
| 5 | 0.08 |
| 6 | 0.10 |
| 10 | 0.17 |
| 12 | 0.20 |
| 15 | 0.25 |
| 20 | 0.33 |
| 30 | 0.50 |
| 40 | 0.67 |
| 45 | 0.75 |
| 50 | 0.83 |
Past midnight
If the end time is the same as or earlier than the start time, the calculator counts the stretch as running past midnight: 10:00 pm to 6:00 am is 8 hours.
